Exploring Kunming’s Jingxing Bird and Flower Market

Hi Aelf Crew,

Today I want to share with you my strange experience in the Jingxing Bird and Flower Market in Kunming. I honestly went there to escape the wet markets, as the sight and smell of them had started to make me feel faint and sick.

It was a refreshing trip and I am still hopeful that the animals on display were indeed intended as pets and not for eating purposes, however from what I saw in the wet markets I will never be too sure.

It is located on “Kunming Old Street” (Yongdao Street), one of the city’s historical district streets.

There was an incredible array of flowers, birds, fish, insects, ‘pets’ like dogs, cats and rabbits, antiques, jewellery, and traditional handicrafts. Perhaps my confusion over the edibleness of the animals stemmed from the presence of insects, as I know these to both be used as bird feed but also widely consumed by people in the region.

Have you been to any similar markets in Kunming? Let me know below!

I’m rooting for you, my little sunflower,

Aelfgifu
